10 EXPERIENCES NEAR MADALENA ORQUÍDEA LIVING

1_ALFAMA SUNRISE
Few things compare to witnessing the natural beauty of a Lisbon sunrise, and Alfama is a very special place to do just that. One of the Alfama viewpoints, such as the one at Santa Luzia, to see the warm ochre tones appear on the horizon, illuminating roofs, church towers, chimneys, convents and the surface of the Tagus. It’s the capturing of an image of rare beauty that will be etched forever in your mind’s eye.
Alfama has always been a place to visit without fail, from the days when it was inhabited by Moors and Jews, and when it was a fishing district not so long ago. When you’re in the midst of its streets and alleys, you can still get the sense of being in a village. It’s a charming neighborhood full of life where the houses blend with the view of the river. The streets are alive with craft shops, restaurants and fado houses.

2_SÃO JORGE CASTLE
Going up to the São Jorge Castle and enjoying its 360-degree view is one of the must-do visits for those who come to Lisbon.
Many Portuguese monarchs have lived in this castle of medieval origin which steadfastly survived enemy attacks across the centuries. The Castle grounds extend over parts of the neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama.
We recommend comfortable shoes when you tour the Castle.

3_VILA BERTA - Villa Bertha à Graça
Very close to Largo da Graça, in a street perpendicular to Rua do Sol à Graça, is one of the most picturesque architectural corners of the city that many people still do not know about. It’s an oasis of tranquility, rich in elegant detail, including terraces, the famous azulejo ceramic tiles and wrought ironwork inspired by Art Nouveau. Built more than 100 years ago to accommodate factory workers, it has now become a sought-after residential area, and often serves as a setting for films and soap operas shot in Portugal. Some say it is the most beautiful street in Lisbon. If you like this village, then you should also visit the nearby Villa Sousa and the Estrela d’Ouro neighborhood.

4_LISBON CATHEDRAL - Largo da Sé
All indications are that the Sé Catedral de Lisboa, also called the Igreja de Santa Maria Maior, was built on top of a Muslim mosque during the 12th century. The Patriarchate of Lisbon has its headquarters here. It mixes various architectural styles and has been a National Monument since 1910.

5_THE SMALLEST LIBRARY IN THE WORLD - Escadinhas de São Cristóvão, Baixa
Right at the entrance of the Conceição staircase, there is an area measuring only 4m2 which houses a collection of more than 3000 books, most of which are old books on the history and heritage of Lisbon and Portugal, the Jewish legacy, the former Portuguese colonies, and great Portuguese authors such as Camões, Eça de Queirós, Fernando Pessoa, and José Saramago.

6_TRAM 28 TOUR
The complete circuit of Tram 28 takes just over an hour and crosses the main historic districts of Lisbon using a mode of transport that has become emblematic of the city. The Tram 28 begins its journey at Campo de Ourique, and passes through Estrela, Lapa, Santos, São Bento, Bica, Chiado, Bairro Alto, Baixa, Castelo, Graça, Intendente and Martim Moniz. If you purchase a one-day ticket you can embark and disembark from the tram whenever and wherever you like.

7_BELÉM
Belém is a neighborhood with a strong emphasis on the history of Maritime Discoveries. Here you will find the Belém Tower, the ex-libris of Lisbon. Also located here are the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos and several museums of great interest, including the Coches Museum, the Navy Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Cultural Center of Belém. Be sure to taste the famous cream pastries in the bakery that holds the original recipe, the Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém.

8_CAIS DO SODRÉ
Cais do Sodré has always had a strong connection to the Tagus River. This former fishing and sailor district is today one of the bohemian areas of the city with a bustling nightlife that brings together locals and tourists in streets full of bars, nightclubs and restaurants. Home to more than 30 restaurants that are open daily, the Mercado da Ribeira has enhanced these lively streets even more.

9_ART AT LISBON’S METRO STATIONS
Enjoy the proximity of metro stations and visit some of the city's emblematic metro stations that double up as permanent contemporary art exhibitions. There are even guided tours available, starting from the Avenida station. The guided tour stops to see the azulejo tiles of Júlio Resende at the Jardim Zoológico station, the screen print designs by Rolando Sá Nogueira at the Laranjeiras station, the Júlio Pomar drawings at the Alto dos Moínhos stop, and the modern azulejos by Manuel Cargaleiro at the Colégio Militar station. But there's more, much more for you to see. Where are you going to stop next?

10_LX FACTORY
Right under the bridge there is an old industrial complex which has been renovated to house offices, shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, art galleries, bookstores, and creative studios. On Sundays, the site is filled with brunch lovers, and buyers and sellers of vintage items and arts and crafts at the weekly fair. An alternative space, that’s for sure!
