THE BEST BEACHES 1 HOUR AWAY FROM LISBON
Madalena Orquídea Living

1_PRAIA DO GUINCHO
Guincho is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Lisbon region. Access is via Estrada do Guincho, which follows the coastline from the village of Cascais. Situated in an area of dunes very exposed to the north winds, the beach regularly enjoys swell waves and there are always many surfers in the water.
The Praia Grande do Guincho is 1 km long and is divided into two parts. Abano, on the north side, has paid parking. The south side, known as Muchaxo, is mostly frequented by young people and surfers.
The Guincho road is one of the most scenic in the country. There are also buses departing from the center of Cascais.

2_LINHA DE CASCAIS BEACHES
Situated less than an hour away from Lisbon and all within walking distance of a train station, these beaches take their name from the Cascais line. There are plenty of prime spots to spread your beach towel on the sand, then go for a swim in the sea. The beaches are the great attraction for visitors to Cascais regardless of the time of year. From Carcavelos to Guincho, Cascais has several beaches to choose from. All you have to do is find a spot to spread your towel. We recommend Conceição beach in Cascais, and the Praia da Poça and Azarujinha beach in Estoril.

3_SÃO PEDRO BEACH
It was on this beach that surfing in Portugal began and the site of the country’s first surf club. It consistently has right-hander waves which delight longboarders.
A large, sandy beach, clear water, a pier to walk along, and rock pools to cool off in at low tide if you prefer not to go into the sea proper. The beach is sheltered from the wind by a large, tall rock.

4_COSTA DE CAPARICA BEACHES
The Caparica Coast is a long stretch of sandy beach facing the Atlantic that offers a variety of wave types every day of the year.
Those who want to surf are spoilt for choice. At Cova do Vapor, the waves are heavier and more demanding than further south. Along its 15-kilometer length of the beaches on the Caparica Coast beaches, you find all sort of different waves. As a rule, the waves further south are easier to surf, and the bigger swells and the right waves are to be found at Fonte da Telha.
Be prepared for heavy traffic when leaving the beach on busier days.

5_COMPORTA BEACH
Comporta Beach is a little further away from Lisbon, but we recommend you take the chance and go there. You won’t be disappointed.
Turquoise blue stretches out as far as the eye can see for those who leave from Tróia heading south toward Comporta. Use the ferry, cross the Sado and travel 30 kilometers across the sea.
Being within the borders of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, this beach is a preserved natural space, where the original dunar vegetation has been conserved, and is surrounded by pine forest. It's a wheelchair accessible beach.

6_TROIA BEACH
The saltwater beach of the Tróia Peninsula looks out onto a calm sea, as do all the beaches that follow to the south for well over ten kilometers until you get to Comporta. It is protected by dunes with a view of the charming Serra da Arrábida and has only simple beach facilities.
The most direct route there is the ferry, which crosses the Sado.
Nature is protected by wooden deck walkways built above the dunes so as not to disturb the vegetation. During your walk to the beach you’ll have close-up views of the abundant vegetation surrounding the walkways.

7_MECO BEACH
Meco Beach is situated next to the village of Meco, on the west coast of Sesimbra municipality.
It’s a quiet beach with a large stretch of sand and very clean water. It is protected by a clay cliff, with natural freshwater springs. The water is suitable for drinking or removing saltwater from your skin. But take care, because sometimes the sea is rough and treacherous; its deep sea bottoms and strong currents demand extra vigilance from those who bring their children with them. It has several car parks with tiered pricing (the closer they are to the beach, the higher the price) and the famous Bar do Peixe, where everything is good. Around here, there are several beach rituals to choose from, such as covering your skin with clay (at Tramagueira Beach), nude bathing (closer to Bicas Beach), and diving in a wild beach (Alfarim).
